Christopher Lightning (aka Day One), Cree Artist from Calgary, Alberta

My name is Christopher Lightning. I sign my work as Day One.
I am an artist from the Samson Cree nation in Maskwacis, Alberta.
I paint in a style I call Neo-Aboriginal. I am self taught and I have been painting since 2010, after breaking my leg badly and ending my time as a carpenter. This also coincided with the birth of my daughter Sasha. She is a big inspiration for me and she now joins me at the events I go to.

I use my work to speak out for human rights and environmental awareness. I believe painting is my voice and I use it as loud and as often as I can.
Early in my time as an artist I sold prints and small canvases at local hip hop concerts. It soon evolved into painting live at shows. I now travel Western Canada painting at festivals and other events.
